Making changes and improvements can be time consuming and can sometimes feel risky. Plan Do Study Act is a proven approach to test an idea by trying out the change and assessing and reviewing the impact on a small scale prior to implementation. For example, imagine an initiative that focuses on improving the care planning process for patients. The team has devised a new care planning document for staff to use and asks one member of staff to use it for one day, or with one patient. They then report back on what went well and what needs further improvement. The team can then revise it, and repeat this process, on an increasingly wide scale, until feedback and measurement gives the team confidence to roll out the care plan.
This Bitesize explains the fundamental principles of PDSA, how PDSA can be applied in practice and PDSAs as a way of recording progress towards improvement. The Bitesize is interactive and will give you a flavour of PDSAs in action.
