Health inequalities are impacting on people in our society like never before. Our colleagues, our friends, our neighbours, our families, ourselves – too many are experiencing poorer health and wellbeing simply due to the circumstances into which they are born, and how they go about their daily lives.

That’s why LOC in the Lakes 2022 will be focusing on health inequalities, considering how we can think and work differently to improve health and wellbeing for the people of north and west Cumbria. We’ll be looking at how we can take more action now to enable individuals to start well, live well, age well, and die well.

The session identifies ways in which health and care sector staff can support patients and service users into becoming volunteers. This includes those with increased support needs who may normally struggle to find work or develop their skills, therefore aids in removing the barriers of inequality.

The support given and the access to volunteering enables people to live their lives more independently and can lead to paid work. There will also be someone on the session who has been through the process who will share their story to advocate the positive way this can change peoples’ lives.

The session will cover:

  • Cumbria CVS Volunteer Brokerage Service and understanding the Volunteer Recruitment Process, e.g. interviews/informal chat, application form, references, DBS checks, training, induction, support, volunteer expenses, etc.
  • Assessing an individual’s readiness for volunteering, and individual’s support needs to enable them to volunteer
  • Volunteer experience about volunteering who needed additional support
  • Informal Volunteering and Community Action
  • Formal Volunteering Opportunities
  • Training Opportunities for patients to support them in their Volunteering Role
  • FAQ in Volunteering and Opportunity for Volunteering Questions and Answers

The session will take place via Microsoft Teams, and a link will be emailed to registered delegates a few days in advance.
