Physiological Observations and NEWS2 (Cohort 84)

This workshop is suitable for all Healthcare workers and carers who may be required to undertake physiological measurements as part of their role.

This workshop is a mix of theory and practice. It will give you the underpinning skills and knowledge required to enable you to take accurate physiological measurements including manual blood pressure and understand when to escalate concerns.

Please note that you will be undertaking measurements including blood pressure on yourself and each other so please wear suitable clothes.

There is a small risk that we may pick up an underlying health problem that you may not be aware of during the course of the day. If this occurs we will suggest you seek advice from your own GP.

By the end of the workshop you will be able to identify a change in a person’s condition and escalate appropriately through:

  • Having a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory and cardiac systems
  • Being able to accurately measure and record Respiratory rate, O2 saturations, Pulse, Blood Pressure, Temperature and Conscious Level.
  • Understand normal parameters for recordings and link abnormalities to anatomy and physiology.
  • Correctly complete a NEWS2 assessment chart and score accurately.
  • Understand when and where to escalate
  • Identify risk of Sepsis.

Preparatory work:

NCIC staff – 262 Mandatory NEWS2 Certification - via ESR

External candidates NEWS learning - https://news.ocbmedia.com/

NCIC STAFF – please print and bring a copy of the competency framework available to download from the intranet – Services – P – Practice Development – Clinical Skills – Competency Framework – Physiological Measurements.

This workshop is a precursor to all clinical skills workshops for non-registered staff. We would recommend completing this then moving onto venepuncture and catheterisation.
